The Ultimate Guide to Packing for an Unforgettable Iceland Adventure

Iceland offers a unique blend of breathtaking landscapes, from cascading waterfalls and dramatic glaciers to the magical spectacle of the northern lights dancing across the night sky. However, to make the most of your Icelandic adventure, it's crucial to be well-prepared for the diverse and sometimes unpredictable Arctic weather. When working with clients to craft their own Iceland itinerary, I often get asked for suggestions on what to pack. After two trips to the land of fire & ice, I feel pretty confident in my packing list, so I’ve decided to compile it into its own blog post for easy reference so that you too have everything you need for an unforgettable trip.

Understanding Iceland's Varied Climate

One of the key elements to consider when packing for Iceland is the ever-changing climate. Whether you're traveling in the summer or winter, it's essential to come prepared for a wide range of weather conditions. Iceland's weather can be quite unpredictable (I’m sure you’ve seen the memes), with rapid shifts between sunny days, chilly temperatures and knock-you-down-winds, so it's crucial to dress in layers to adapt to the changing elements.

Clothing Essentials for All-Weather Adventures

Stay Warm with Thermal Underwear and Fleece Layers

The first layer of defense against the Icelandic chill should be thermal underwear and fleece layers. These will keep you cozy and insulated, providing you with much-needed warmth during your outdoor explorations. Opt for top-notch options like the TSLA Thermal Underwear Set, available for both women and men, and the Cotopaxi Abrazo Half-Zip Fleece Jacket, designed for optimum comfort and durability.

Embrace the Rain with Waterproof Jackets and Pants

Iceland's climate is renowned for its rainfall, and that's why a high-quality waterproof jacket and pants are essential additions to your packing list. The Columbia Glennaker Rain Jacket, both for women and men, is the perfect choice to shield you from the elements, ensuring you stay dry and comfortable throughout your journey. Pair it with the Marmot PreCip Eco Pants, made from 100 percent recycled nylon, to complete your rain-ready ensemble. Consider the Dafengea Fleece Lined Waterproof Pants as a more budget friendly option. I wore them for two weeks straight during my last trip, and my legs never got cold or wet.

Protect Your Feet with Sturdy Hiking Boots

Exploring Iceland's stunning landscapes often involves traversing rugged terrains, which calls for reliable and sturdy footwear. La Sportiva Nucleo High II GTX Hiking Boots, available for both women and men, provide exceptional support and traction, ensuring your feet stay comfortable and secure during your adventures. Another budget friendly option are the XPETI Thermator Mid High-Top Hiking Boots for both men and women. They’re lightweight, super warm and comfortable right out of the box.

Versatility with Packable Jackets

For additional flexibility, consider packing a lightweight and packable jacket like the Columbia Delta Ridge Down Jacket. These compressible wonders can be easily stashed in your daypack when not in use, providing an extra layer of insulation for colder days.

Don't Forget Comfortable T-shirts

While outerwear is essential for warmth, comfortable base layers are equally crucial to regulate your body temperature. Smartwool Merino Base Layer T-shirts, available for both women and men, are perfect for this purpose, offering moisture-wicking capabilities to keep you comfortable during various activities. Alternatively, layering a thermal long sleeve shirt and comfortable t-shirt will also get the job done, but it could get bulky and uncomfortable on a longer hike.

Swimwear for Iceland's Hot Springs

As you probably know by now, packing swimwear is essential for an Icelandic adventure! Iceland boasts numerous natural hot springs, such as the world-famous Blue Lagoon, where you can soak and relax amidst the breathtaking scenery. Be sure to include a swimsuit like the Cupshe Women's Swimsuit or the Kanu Surf Men's Havana Swim Trunks for these rejuvenating experiences. While the silica found at the Blue Lagoon and Myvatn Baths can do a number on your hair (be sure to condition or swear a swim cap!), your bathing suit will be perfectly safe.

Must-Have Accessories for a Hassle-Free Trip

Quick-Dry Towels for the Hot Springs

While some popular hot springs provide towels, it's best to come prepared with your own quick-drying towel. The Rainleaf Microfiber Towel is compact, lightweight, and ideal for your Icelandic hot spring adventures. These are life-savers.

Trekking Poles for Added Stability

If you're planning to venture into Iceland's striking wilderness, consider bringing trekking poles for enhanced stability. The Trekology Collapsible Nordic Hiking Poles are lightweight and easy to pack, offering the support you need for more challenging terrains.

Sunscreen for the Sunny Days

I know, I know. It doesn’t seem like the most logical thing to pack when traveling to Iceland, but believe me, even on cloudy days, if you’re outside long enough, the UV will get you. And when the sun comes out, it will feel so good, you won’t think twice about the potency of the sun since the weather will still be crisp. Next thing you know, you’ll be looking for aloe at Bonus. (I admit, I wasn’t prepared for this on my 2018 trip.) Pack yourself a small bottle of sunscreen, or opt for a moisturizer with SPF like the Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Facial Moisturizer with Broad Spectrum SPF 15 Sunscreen.

Cozy Gloves and Beanies for Cold Days

To keep your extremities warm during chilly days, pack a pair of insulated gloves like The North Face Apex+ Insulated Etip Glove, which allows you to use touchscreen devices without removing them. Additionally, don't forget to bring a beanie like the Carhartt Knit Cuffed Beanie to protect your head from the cold winds.

Silk Eye Mask for the Midnight Sun

If you're traveling to Iceland during the summer, the midnight sun can make falling asleep a challenge. Pack a silk eye mask like the Sutera Hydroluna Silk Eye Mask to block out the light and ensure a restful night's sleep.

Outlet Adapters for Charging Your Devices

Iceland uses the Euro-plug or C-shaped adapter, so be sure to carry outlet adapters like the JMFONE International Travel Plug Adapter to charge your electronic devices effortlessly. I’m obsessed with this adapter. The built in USB ports are a life saver to charge all my devices and camera gear overnight.

Reusable Water Bottle to Reduce Waste

Iceland's pristine water is safe to drink, making a reusable water bottle a sustainable and environmentally-friendly choice. Consider the Platypus DuoLock SoftBottle for its versatility and convenience.

Neck Gaiter and Sunglasses for Windy Days

Iceland's winds can be intense, but you can shield yourself with a Smartwool Merino 250 Neck Gaiter, designed to stay securely in place. Additionally, protect your eyes from the sun's glare with your favorite sunglasses.

Final Thoughts

As you prepare for your unforgettable Iceland adventure, remember that the key to a successful trip lies in proper planning and packing. By following this tried and true packing list, you'll be fully equipped to experience the wonders of Iceland while staying comfortable and safe in any weather. So, gear up, embrace the Arctic Mother Nature, and embark on an extraordinary journey to the land of fire and ice! Happy adventuring!
