Hack Your PTO to Maximize Your 2025 Time Off
Most Americans get around two weeks of PTO per year (if they’re lucky!), and if you ask me, that’s simply not enough time to see the world like you deserve to. Between work demands and everyday life, it can be hard to truly disconnect and experience new destinations. But with a bit of strategizing, you can make the most of your PTO days in 2025 by combining them with major U.S. holidays, allowing you to create longer vacations with minimal impact on your PTO balance.
Sound too good to be true? It’s not!
By planning ahead and being strategic with your PTO requests, you can unlock more time for yourself—whether it’s enjoying a tropical beach, exploring a historic city, or simply unwinding in nature.
Below, I’ll show you how to take advantage of three key holiday periods next year and extend your vacations, so you can squeeze out a few extra days of R&R.
Winter Vacation: New Year’s Getaway (5-6 Days Off)
Nothing makes you want to escape your cubicle more than the long, gray days of winter. Luckily, New Year's Day in 2025 falls midweek, making it a perfect time to bundle your PTO with this holiday and stretch your vacation into nearly a week. This period is ideal for recharging after the hectic holiday season and gearing up for the new year ahead.
PTO Hack:
Holiday: New Year’s Day - Wednesday, January 1st, 2025
PTO: Take Thursday, January 2nd, and Friday, January 3rd, off
Weekend Days: Saturday, January 4th, and Sunday, January 5th
Return to Work: Monday, January 6th
That’s five days (or six if your employer includes New Year’s Eve as a holiday), perfect for a quick but meaningful winter escape. Whether you prefer to cozy up in the mountains or fly somewhere warm and sunny, this is a great time to get away.
Where to Go:
Close to home?
Head to the mountains! January is peak season for skiing and snowboarding in the U.S. Destinations like Aspen, Lake Tahoe, or Park City offer the best slopes, après-ski fun, and a chance to experience the winter wonderland vibe in a cozy mountain lodge.
Want to escape the cold?
Grab your passport and head south! Fly to Cancun, where you can kick back at an all-inclusive resort and enjoy white sandy beaches and endless sunshine. Whether you want to explore ancient ruins or sip cocktails by the pool, Cancun has the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure.
Summer Getaway: Fourth of July Adventure (10 Days Off)
Did you know that fluorescent office lights are even more unbearable during the summer months? (Okay, I made that up, but it feels true, doesn’t it?) Independence Day in 2025 falls on a Friday, which means you can take advantage of a 10-day vacation with just five days of PTO. This is the perfect opportunity to unwind, spend time in nature, or explore a new international destination during the long, warm summer days.
PTO Hack:
Holiday: Independence Day - Friday, July 4th, 2025
PTO: Take Monday, July 7th, through Friday, July 11th, off
Weekend Days: Two Saturdays (July 5th and 12th) and two Sundays (July 6th and 13th)
Return to Work: Monday, July 14th
That’s a full 10-day break to enjoy the summer to its fullest. Whether you’re exploring national parks, road-tripping along the coast, or jet-setting to Europe, this extended summer vacation is your chance to make unforgettable memories.
Where to Go:
Close to home?
Why not treat yourself to a California road trip? Start your adventure with the breathtaking scenery of Big Sur, where you can hike along coastal cliffs and watch the waves crash below. Then, head inland to Paso Robles for wine tasting in one of California’s top wine regions. Finish off your trip with a peaceful stay in the charming seaside village of Cambria, where you can relax and recharge.
Ready for something more exotic?
Explore the stunning Dalmatian Coast of Croatia! Spend your days sailing between ancient cities like Dubrovnik and Split, lounging on the beaches of Hvar, and enjoying the Mediterranean’s clear blue waters and rich culture. Croatia is perfect for history lovers, beachgoers, and anyone looking for a mix of relaxation and adventure.
Fall Break: Thanksgiving Escape (9 Days Off)
For some, Thanksgiving is all about spending time with family and eating turkey, but for others, it’s the perfect time to get away and avoid awkward dinner conversations with Uncle Frank. Why not use this time to squeeze in a final vacation before the year ends? With a little planning, you can bundle your PTO and get nine days off without depleting your remaining PTO balance.
PTO Hack:
Holiday: Thanksgiving - Thursday, November 27th, 2025
PTO: Take Monday, November 24th, Tuesday, November 25th, Wednesday, November 26th, and Friday, November 28th, off
Weekend Days: Two Saturdays (November 22nd and 29th) and two Sundays (November 23rd and 30th)
Return to Work: Monday, December 1st
This nine-day break is perfect for recharging before the busy holiday season and making the most of the last bit of PTO before the year wraps up.
Where to Go:
Close to home?
Head down south to Charleston, South Carolina, for a taste of history, culture, and Southern hospitality. With its cobblestone streets, antebellum architecture, and mild fall weather, Charleston is a perfect blend of charm and comfort. Whether you’re strolling through historic neighborhoods or enjoying seafood along the waterfront, this city is ideal for a fall getaway.
Passport in hand?
Escape to Costa Rica for an adventure in one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. You can explore lush rainforests, lounge on the beautiful Pacific Coast beaches, or experience activities like zip-lining, surfing, and visiting volcanoes. For nature lovers, Costa Rica is the ultimate destination to end the year on a high note.
By being strategic with your PTO requests and planning around holidays, you can stretch your vacation days further and enjoy more time for relaxation and exploration. From skiing in the mountains to basking on tropical beaches, there are plenty of opportunities to create unforgettable memories in 2025.
